Are you concerned about the safety of your teen driver?  Accident statistics have shown for decades that teenage drivers are much more prone to mishaps on the road than seasoned motorists. In addition to higher incidences of alcohol-related collisions, novice motorists simply appear to lack the necessary wheel-time to make correct driving decisions. Good driving skills, it seems, develop over time.

According to the National Safety Council, from 1991 through 1996, 16-year-old drivers had an average of 37 police-reported crashes per 100 drivers. This is more than 20 times the national average for all other drivers combined. In this same time period, these drivers were 16 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash compared to the national average.

These statistics are alarming; however, you can help your teen become a safer driver.  Lake County , Illinois conducted a driver safety training evaluation over a ten-year period.  This study showed that drivers under the age of 21 who had taken the National Safety Council’s defensive driver training were half as likely to be cited for a moving violation and almost six times less likely to be involved in one or more accidents and one or more moving violations.
